Free Theater on H Street Program

The H Street Initiative

For the past three years, there has been a group of businesses and other organizations trying to initiate a new interest in the development of Washington's H Street, NE commercial corridor. This area of the city has not fully recovered commercially or culturally from its destruction during the civil rights riots in 1968. Along with city officials and small business owners, the Theater Alliance is now at the forefront of the movement that is revitalizing this area of the city. The creation of the H Street Playhouse by private owners was the first step in what is now becoming a long awaited renaissance and restoration of this DC community. Once the Theater Alliance agreed to become the resident company at the H Street Playhouse, we became the only professional theater with its performance home in all of Northeast Washington. Now, as is proven time and again, when the artists move in, what follows is activity, growth, and rebirth. Our doors are open, and we have already attracted critical praise and thousands of people to H Street, and have helped inspire Mayor Anthony Williams to officially designate our 1300 block of H Street Northeast as Washington’s new “Cultural Arts District”.

The Program

The ultimate opportunity we are pursuing is to become an important part of the H Street community. For us this means helping to bring people, business, and a renewed pride back to this area of the city. That is the motivation behind the creation of this program that has begun to strengthen our relationship with H Street.

Thanks to the generous support of the Weissberg and MARPAT Foundations, as well as the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, we are able to give away up to 20 free tickets per performance for every Theater Alliance production to those living within a five-block radius of the H Street Playhouse. This program also includes all students currently enrolled at Gallaudet University. Please note: free tickets are only given for Theater Alliance productions. Anyone wishing to receive a free ticket simply needs to bring a driver’s license, billing statement, or Gallaudet Student ID to the H Street Playhouse to receive your free tickets. Only one free ticket per person.
