Vision: A catalyst for innovation and diversity, Theater Alliance is among DC’s pre-eminent theater companies, one that consistently produces thought provoking and socially pertinent work, successfully uniting audiences of all backgrounds through the power of creative presentation and participation.
Theater Alliance was founded in 1993 with the distinct goal of producing work that would illuminate the experiences, philosophies and interests of DC's diverse populations. That goal was furthered when Theater Alliance moved from its home at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop to become the sole theater-in-residence at the H Street Playhouse.
Each season, we produce three to four plays including world, American and Washington, DC premieres. Our productions highlight the eclectic work of renowned playwrights such as Salmon Rushdie, Daniel MacIvor, Toni Morrison, Rebecca Gilman, Adam Bock, Victor Lodato and Seamus Heaney, among others. Theater Alliance has been recognized for its artistry with 21 Helen Hayes nominations.
Under the leadership of a Artistic Director Colin Hovde, Theater Alliance began a new chapter in 2012. Having served as the organization's associate artistic director in 2005, Mr. Hovde gained strong institutional knowledge. He brought a vast artistic experience, creative energy, a keen business eye with a focus on fiscal health and the growth of the company.
Under Hovde's leadership, Theater Alliance has mounted six full-scale productions: a reprise of its popular Black Nativity by Langston Hughes; the area premiere of Fin Kennedy's How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found (Helen Hayes Recommended); the world premiere of Nicholas Wardigo's Hum (Helen Hayes Recommended); the world premiere of Gwydion Suilebhan’s “Reals;” Helen Pafumi and Jason Lott’s 2011 Helen Hayes Nominated Wonderful Life; and the area premiere of Anthony Neilson’s The Night Before Christmas (Helen Hayes Recommended). These shows earned positive reviews and supportive audiences. In addition to these productions, in the past year Theater Alliance produced the successful reading series
Theater Alliance is a member of the League of Washington Theaters, The Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington, CHAMPS (Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce), and Cultural Tourism DC. Theater Alliance is funded in part by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
